She rushed into her room and did not even have to look under the bed to know what had happened.

Coquin was out.

He did it.

After a moment to calm her temper, she brought out the silver chocolate pot, polished it on her sleeve and set it on the bedside table. Slowly she sank to her bed.

Coquin was gone. Now she was alone.

Oh, she complained about her little pet demon at every opportunity, but it was a sort of company. Somebody who understood her better than anybody else ever could.

It all felt different now.

She did not know why, but there were tears in her eyes.

Why, oh why did he have to come here and pry? She knew, the moment she saw him, that he would not be good for her. His arrival was like a black-covered box being set before her with no explanation. She knew she must look inside it— curiosity insisted— but at the same time she was fearful of the thing he brought. Dreading it.

But wanting it too.

Amalie had a strong suspicion that it was part of her transformation into a woman, into the being she had started to become when she arrived at this house. She felt a strange mixture of elation and sorrow. And a little anger, because nobody had asked her if she wanted this. Whatever it was.

If there was one thing that made her uneasy it was the sensation of having no control over her own life. Over her own pet demon.

But now Coquin was out and there was nothing she could do about it.
